The clocks went back on Sunday, Halloween is on Saturday, and it is now
properly dark by teatime. Whatever you think of winter, it has arrived,
and your home is where you will spend most of it.
So this week, a warmer subject than usual: how to make any home, owned
or rented, feel brighter, cosier and safer through the dark months,
without spending much at all.
Because you now live in it mostly after dark. The kitchen that glowed at
6pm in June is lit by a single ceiling bulb in November, and rooms you
loved all summer can suddenly feel flat.
Nothing about the room changed. The light did. Which means light is the
fix, and light is cheap. There is a warmth side and a safety side too,
and we will take all three in turn.
Layer it. One ceiling light makes a room flat; two or three lamps at
different heights make the same room feel warm and deep. Charity
shops are full of decent lamps.
Go warm with the bulbs. Soft warm-white light feels like evening;
cold blue-white feels like a dentist's waiting room. Check the
packet before you buy.
Clean the windows and pull back the curtains fully in the daytime.
In the dark months every scrap of daylight counts, so let it all in.
Use mirrors deliberately. Opposite a window, a mirror doubles your
daylight; opposite a lamp, it doubles your glow.
Light the arrival. A porch or hallway light that welcomes you home
Routine beats blasting. Set the heating to come on before you wake and
before you get home, rather than running it flat out in reaction to a
cold house. Bleed radiators so you are paying for heat that actually
arrives, and shut the curtains at dusk, which keeps a surprising amount
of warmth in the room.
Cheap draught excluders under doors, and a decent blanket on the sofa,
finish the job. None of this is glamorous. All of it works.
Renting? One extra line for you: heating and hot water problems are
repairs, not inconveniences. Report them to your landlord or agent in
writing as soon as they appear, however small they seem.
A dark house at 6pm announces itself, so put a lamp on a plug-in timer
for the evenings you are out. Check the outside light works before the
trick-or-treaters arrive, and bolt the side gate while you are there.
It is two minutes of jobs, and it covers the one real downside of the
cosiest months.
Ten minutes in daylight this weekend saves a slip in the dark later.
Sweep the wet leaves off the path and steps, because they are as
slippery as ice and arrive a month earlier. Check the outside tap is off
or lagged before the first frost, and trim back anything that has grown
across the streetlight or your own porch light since summer.
Renters, the same list applies to you, minus anything structural: report
the broken gate latch or the dead security light rather than living with
it all winter.
The porch light is the signal: on means knock, off means please walk on,
and both deserve respecting. If you are hosting the street's small
ghosts, clear the path of trip hazards while it is still light, and
think about a battery tealight in the pumpkin rather than a flame,
especially near costumes and doorsteps.
And if yours is the dark-window house this year, that is fine too. The
lamp-on-a-timer trick works on Halloween exactly as well as any other
night.
However you spend Saturday, from all of us: have a good one. Winter at
home is what you light it to be.
At 2am on Sunday 25 October 2026, when British Summer Time ended and the
UK returned to GMT. The clocks next change in late March.
Warm white. It is the difference between a room that feels like evening
and one that feels like an office, and it is printed on the bulb's
packaging.
A lamp on a slim console table or shelf, warm bulb, ideally on a timer
so it greets you at the door. Add a mirror and the one lamp works twice.
If you know someone who would find this useful, please share it with
them.
