From 10 to 16 August 2026, the country marks National Allotments Week, and this year's theme is a lovely one: Grow to Learn. It celebrates the humble patch of green where people grow food, swap tips and quietly look after one another.

In Hemel Hempstead, outdoor and community space has never felt more valuable. This is the right moment to talk about why it matters and how to get involved, even if you do not have a garden of your own.

Why does outdoor space matter so much?

A garden, allotment or shared green space gives people fresh air, gentle exercise, a reason to step away from a screen, and somewhere for children to learn where food comes from.

It is good for wellbeing and good for community. An allotment site is one of the few places where neighbours of every age and background genuinely talk to each other. This year's Grow to Learn theme encourages schools and families to grow together.

What if you do not have a garden?

You have more options than you might think, and you do not need acres to enjoy them.

  • Look into an allotment. Most councils keep a waiting list, so it is worth adding your name even if there is a wait.
  • Find a community garden. Many areas have shared growing spaces run by volunteers and welcome an extra pair of hands.
  • Start small at home. A few pots on a balcony or windowsill can grow herbs, salad and tomatoes surprisingly well.
  • Get the children involved. Growing something from seed is one of the simplest and cheapest summer activities.

How can you get involved this year?

National Allotments Week is an invitation to take part. You could visit a local allotment open day, volunteer at a community plot, or simply plant something with your children in the spirit of Grow to Learn.

As a local team, we care about the places we live and work in, not just the homes that change hands within them. A strong community with green spaces at its heart is a better place to live and a better place to call home.

Frequently asked questions

It runs from 10 to 16 August and is organised by the National Allotment Society, with the theme Grow to Learn.

How do I get an allotment?

Most allotments are managed by the local council, which keeps a waiting list. Contact your local authority to add your name. Waiting times vary, so it is worth registering sooner rather than later.
